Projects and pathways

The Foundation works within Frontier's ecosystem but concentrates support on the projects we believe offer the strongest long-term impact -- even when they are not the cheapest option today. Below are the four removal pathways and the real companies building them.

Direct air capture

Machines pull CO2 directly from ambient air using chemical sorbents and heat. The captured carbon is compressed and injected into basalt rock formations underground, where it mineralizes over decades. Energy-intensive today, but costs are declining rapidly and the approach is highly measurable.

Enhanced weathering

World's first large-scale enhanced weathering offtake - $57.1M with Lithos

Spreading finely ground silicate rock (basalt or olivine) on agricultural fields accelerates a natural geological reaction: as rainwater and soil chemistry break down the minerals, CO2 is converted into bicarbonate and locked into soil or washed into the ocean as stable mineral carbon. Farmers benefit from improved soil nutrients.

Biomass carbon removal and storage

$53M committed to Charm Industrial alone - 37% price decline by 2030

Plants naturally capture CO2 as they grow. These approaches stop the carbon returning to the atmosphere when that biomass decays: Charm Industrial converts crop waste and sawdust into bio-oil and injects it deep underground. Other approaches produce biochar - a stable charcoal that can remain in soil for centuries.

Ocean & mineralization

$58.3M committed to Vaulted Deep - one of Frontier's largest single bets

The ocean is already Earth's largest carbon sink, absorbing about 30% of human CO2 emissions. Ocean alkalinity enhancement - adding minerals to seawater - increases its CO2 absorption capacity permanently. Subsurface injection of CO2 into reactive rock formations triggers mineralization, locking carbon as solid rock.

Direct air capture

How it works

Air passes over a solid sorbent that binds CO2. Heat releases the CO2 in concentrated form. The gas is then compressed and either stored underground or used to make durable products. Current costs are high but decline sharply with scale and clean electricity.

How projects are vetted

We don't pick projects in isolation. Both funding channels run through Frontier, the advance market commitment founded by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, McKinsey, and tens of thousands of Stripe Climate businesses. Frontier sources suppliers with 60+ external technical reviewers, monitors delivery, and retires tons only after independent verification.

Frontier targets removal that is permanent (storing carbon for centuries or longer), measurable, additional, and on a path to costing under $100 per ton at scale. Because these suppliers are early-stage, tons typically take 2-5 years to be delivered and verified.

The Foundation's 50% donation share is allocated to a narrower set of Frontier-vetted projects within these pathways -- chosen with Frontier's science and commercial experts for where early capital can have the greatest long-term impact.
